Benjamin Franklin and a new republic

One afternoon, after leaving Philadelphia's Independence Hall, a young man approached Benjamin Franklin. In that broiling hot month, the statesmen of the young nation had been debating duriously over the establishment of the Constitution of the United States. The young man walked up to Franklin and asked, "Well Sir, what sort of government have you given us? A monarchy or a republic?" Franklin, who understood the importance of having popular support to keep a republic alive, responded, "A republic, if you can keep it."
