A reverse outline starts with a draft you already have. Instead of planning what you intend to write, you record what each paragraph actually says and does. The gap between those two things often explains why an essay feels unfocused.

Give every paragraph two labels

Read one paragraph at a time. In the margin, write a short summary of its main idea. Then write its job: introducing a problem, making a claim, explaining evidence, addressing an objection, or drawing a conclusion. Keep each label brief enough that the structure remains visible. If you cannot summarize a paragraph without using “and” several times, it may contain more than one main idea. If a paragraph has a topic but no clear job, ask why the reader needs it at that point.

Paragraph 3: Repeats the evening schedule — duplicates paragraph 1. Paragraph 4: Explains staffing costs — introduces the main objection. Paragraph 5: Proposes a limited trial — offers a response and next step.

This outline suggests two revisions: remove or repurpose the repeated material, and make sure the proposed trial directly addresses the staffing concern. It does not tell you to delete every descriptive passage; background is useful when it helps the argument develop.

Look for missing connections

Read the labels without reading the essay. Does the sequence make sense? Does a conclusion appear before the evidence needed to understand it? Is one point supported across several paragraphs while another important point receives only a sentence? Compare the outline with your thesis. If the body develops a more interesting or precise claim, revise the thesis instead of forcing the body to fit an early idea. If the assignment requires a particular structure, check the outline against that requirement too.

Revise structure before polishing sentences

Move or combine paragraphs, add missing explanation, and cut repetition first. Then rewrite transitions to reflect the new order. There is little value in perfecting a sentence you later remove. Finish by reading the revised outline again: each paragraph should have a clear purpose, and the sequence should help a reader follow your reasoning.
